Department of Social Welfare

Introduction

Our Department was established in 1989 and the teaching program of the Institute of Social Welfare was initially designed for master's students. The program, however, was soon extended to incorporate both doctoral and undergraduate programs in 1992 when Taiwanese society had gone through a series of radical social transformation and also in a critical juncture for sustaining future development. Therefore, in terms of overall social changes, the Department is putting a great deal of effort to cultivate global leaders in this field, advancing the social welfare not only in Taiwan but also globally. Furthermore, we always whole heartedly welcome all who embrace the same concern and vision, albeit different specialties background, to share their findings or researches with us, making our Department more thriving and our programmes more effective.

Teaching goals

(1) From the very beginning the Institution (including both the Department and the Institute) has been designed as a multi-disciplinary and policy-oriented research and teaching institution. (2) Reflecting in integration of the various disciplinary backgrounds of social science, which include sociology, economics, political science, public finances, and social policy, social work and in the diversity of courses offered to fill different student background. (3) Cultivate leaders with professional knowledge of social welfare, analytical ability, critical thinking ability, and the ability to conduct research independently.

Characteristic

 (1) Depending on specialty of faculties to constitute two course groups, namely, Social Policy & Institution and Social Services & Management. Partly student of undergraduate course fulfills the professional Social Work license training in Taiwan. (2) Distinguished by the prominence it gives to discuss the puzzle of social welfare development in East and West. (3) Emphasis a humanistic orientation aims to highlight the vision of social welfare as a field of study that deals not only with the technical side of policy design. (4) Deeply involved with the moral and political philosophical issues that any collective approaches to the betterment of human community inescapably have to face up to.

Employment Distribution

 About 27% of alumni (undergraduates) from the Department are found to have chosen social welfare related careers and another 16% continue to pursue graduate study. As the Department concentrates its efforts to nurture the finest graduates and to cultivate social leaders to contribute to national development, graduates from the Department mostly participate in academic researches and more than 90% of PhD graduates enter into public/private institutions, research centers, civic organizations, and more. Through the Department's extensive dedication and endeavor, job opportunities for Department graduates are gradually increasing.

Courses

Undergraduate program

 All the students are required to take courses equivalent to 130 credits, including 88 credits of required courses and 42 credits of electives.

MScprogram

The graduation requirement of the MSc program is 30 credits, including 13 credits from the required courses and 17 credits from the electives selected by students according to their area of specialization, study and personal interest. The program is concluded by the submission of a thesis.

PhD program

The requirement for graduation of the PhD program is 30 credits, including 13 credits from the required courses and 17 credits from the electives selected by students according to their area of specialization, study and personal interest. The program is concluded by the submission of a dissertation, which must "contain an original contribution to knowledge or understanding" and two referred journal articles published before the viva voce examination. The dissertation has to be examined by a committee of examiners.
